Incorporating Shear into Stochastic Eulerian Lagrangian Methods for Rheological Studies of Complex Fluids and Soft Materials
نویسنده
چکیده
We introduce computational methods based on fluctuating hydrodynamics for investigations of the rheological responses of complex fluids and soft materials. Our approach allows for different types of shear to be imposed on the unit periodic cell and is shown to take into account consistently the microstructure elastic mechanics, fluid-structure hydrodynamic coupling, and thermal fluctuations. New discretizations and stochastic field generation methods are developed to handle in a computationally efficient manner the generalized periodic boundary conditions that impose the shear. To show in practice how the new methods can be used for the investigation of diverse rheological responses, we present several illustrative applications. These include the study of shear thinning of a polymeric fluid, the study of complex moduli for the oscillatory responses of a polymerized lipid vesicle, and the study of aging of a gel-like material.

Stochastic Eulerian-lagrangian Methods for Fluid-structure Interactions with Thermal Fluctuations and Shear Boundary Conditions
A computational approach is introduced for the study of the rheological properties of complex fluids and soft materials. The approach allows for a consistent treatment of microstructure elastic mechanics, hydrodynamic coupling, thermal fluctuations, and externally driven shear flows. A mixed description in terms of Eulerian and Lagrangian reference frames is used for the physical system. Micros...

متن کاملDevelopment of a rheological model for polymeric fluids based on FENE model
Rheological models for polymer solutions and melts based on the finitely extensible non-linear elastic (FENE) dumbbell theory are reviewed in this study. The FENE-P model that is a well-known Peterlin approximation of the FENE model, indicates noticeable deviation from original FENE predictions and also experimental results, especially in the transient flow. In addition, both FENE and FENE-P mo...
متن کاملRheological hysteresis in soft glassy materials.
The nonlinear rheology of a soft glassy material is captured by its constitutive relation, shear stress versus shear rate, which is most generally obtained by sweeping up or down the shear rate over a finite temporal window. For a huge amount of complex fluids, the up and down sweeps do not superimpose and define a rheological hysteresis loop. By means of extensive rheometry coupled to time-res...
